What is a ray? What is a skate?
Rays and skates are dorsoventrally flattened fish that are closely related to sharks. All are considered to be within a closely related group of fish called elasmobranchs. Rays belong to three scientific orders – Pristiformes, Myliobatiformes, and Torpediniformes while skates are classified in the order Rajiformes.
How long have rays and skates existed?
The fossil record of rays and skates dates back to the Lower Jurassic (150 million years ago). All of the major taxa are known by the Upper Cretaceous (100 million years ago) to the Paleocene (50 million years ago). In contrast to the bony fishes, cartilaginous fishes leave behind little fossil records with the exception of teeth and scales.

Voor wie?
Skates are cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Rajidae in the superorder Batoidea of rays. More than 150 species have been described, in 17 genera.[2] Softnose skates and pygmy skates were previously treated as subfamilies of Rajidae (Arhynchobatinae and Gurgesiellinae), but are now considered as distinct families. Alternatively, the name "skate" is used to refer to the entire order of Rajiformes (families Anacanthobatidae, Arhynchobatidae, Gurgesiellidae and Rajidae)

Throughout the year you will notice price differences, reflecting the most popular and less popular weeks. The cheaper weeks often mean that the slopes will be quieter, but on the other hand the nightlife will be less lively (depending on the location). From early to mid season the weather can usually be quite different, but the snow is often good. In mid-season (usually February and March) the snow can be a bit icy and very cold in the mornings, but the days start to get longer, the weather more stable and the snow even better. By April the weather is a bit warmer and the days are longer, but the snow cover starts to decrease.
You must take out insurance with winter sports cover. Skiing accidents happen quite regularly, even on beginner and 'not difficult' slopes it is easy enough to have an accident requiring a hospital trip.
We cannot recommend insurance policies and there are many different factors to consider. Some standard travel insurance policies have 'winter add-ons' and others are included as standard. However, from experience we notice that most people take out specialist winter sports insurance. Please read each policy carefully to ensure it is correct for you and covers the activities you will be doing.
